Paddington – The Suburb
Paddington borders Red Hill, Milton, Ashgrove and Bardon, and is one of Brisbane’s oldest, and yet most popular suburbs. It is located 3km’s west of Brisbane’s Central Business District, and has some of the most amazing houses for sale with spectacular city views that Brisbane has to offer.
Paddington’s convenience to the CBD as well as redevelopments such as the Suncorp Stadium has been a major contributor to the suburbs growth. The expansion and upgrade to various other village precincts such as Rosalie and Milton have also contributed to Paddington’s growth over the years.
Featuring cafes, antique shops, and local grocers and offering convenience and a lifestyle unlike many others, Paddington’s main stretch includes Latrobe Terrace and continues on to Given Terrace which also offers many boutique and quirky shops. The closest end to the city, Caxton Street, features many restaurants, pubs and clubs, making Paddington the best of all worlds when it comes to lifestyle and entertainment and is one of Brisbane’s most popular suburbs for eating out, boutique shopping and night clubs.
One of Brisbane’s older suburbs, it’s close to the city and still boasts many beautiful old homes.
It’s well worth spending a day, or even a weekend, strolling and exploring the length of Paddington and taking rest breaks at some of the ambient watering holes.
Head off the main road and you’ll find steep hills and amazing city views.
Paddington is not only popular amongst professionals; it has also become quite popular amongst young couples as well, various educational facilities once again providing convenience within the local area.
A Brief History
Originally part of the Town of Ithaca, Paddington was named after the borough in England named Paddington. In 1859 the sale of 55 lots marked the first land to be sold in this newly named area of Paddington.
Development of real estate Paddington began and progressed until the late 1870’s, when challenges such as steep slopes slowed public transport growth. 1879 saw the introduction of the horse bus which provided transport for Paddington locals until the introduction of the electric tram line in 1907. The growing suburb consisted of both hill top mansions and workers cottages in the gullies, many of which have been renovated and can still be seen today.
Most Common Style of Home in Paddington
As mentioned above, early Paddington real estate consisted of both hill top mansions and workers cottages, today these styles of homes are often referred to as Queenslanders and Cottages. Paddington is dominated by these two styles, defining the area and giving it the characteristic and significance as a historic Queensland location.
